Newman Central Catholic High School Student of the Month: Ashley Wierman

Favorite class: AP biology, because I love biology and expanding my knowledge in science.

Least-favorite class: I don’t really have a least-favorite class, because I try to apply myself in every class and challenge myself to learn more and enjoy the class itself.

Favorite teacher: Chris Somers, because he has been a huge role model for me in many ways and I can talk to him about anything in my life.

School activities in which you participate: Key club, Knitters Club, Ambassadors Club (which offers student-led tours and representation of Newman), Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Math Team, and National Honor Society

What will you do after high school? I will attend a four-year university to major in nursing and become a nurse practitioner.

What have you learned in school that you don’t think you ever will use? I don’t believe anything I have learned will be useless. All information is important, and I trust my teachers believe that their teachings are going to be used in my future.

If you could change anything about your school, what would it be? It would be to allow sweatshirts during the day as long as they are appropriate. because I’m always freezing.

If you could create a new class, what would it be? Home economics, because it would be very helpful to learn about how to balance finances, work life and personal life, as well as independence skills.

What does it take to be a successful high school student? I believe it is crucial to have a strong drive to do your best. The only way I have accomplished what I have is because I am so driven and am able to set goals for myself daily and exceed those goals.

Do you have a job? I work at Arthur’s Garden Deli in Dixon. My job is so enjoyable because I love the girls I work with and being able to put smiles on peoples faces.

How would you describe your group of friends? My group of friends is so drastically different. I have more quiet friends, and more loud friends, but I enjoy having a variety of friends. I myself am very talkative, but I like to be with friends who are more quiet to get them out of their shell and be comfortable with me.

Who is your best friend? Sarah Tunink. She is special to me because we have grown up together and enjoy all of the same things. We get along so well and it feels like we’re more sisters than anything.

What do you do in your free time? I play golf, crochet blankets, and bake.

What kind of music are you listening to? Country music, pop, rap, classic rock, and now Christmas music.

If you could go anywhere in the world for free, where would it be? I would go to Italy because of the impactful culture, great food, and beautiful monuments.

What is your favorite childhood memory? Having family birthday parties with everyone I love.

What is the best way to cheer you up? Tell me my smile makes peoples’ days.

What is your life’s philosophy? Live every day to the fullest, and even if I don’t have a good day, I want to make sure others have a good day.
