One hospitalized after head-on crash on Route 23 near DeKalb

DeKALB – A head-on collision between two vehicles on Route 23 south of DeKalb on Thursday sent one person to the hospital and left the road closed for more than an hour.

DeKalb County Sheriff’s deputies were called at 2:26 p.m. to Route 23 about a quarter-mile south of Gurler Road after a passerby reported the crash, police said.

Sheriff’s Lt. Jim Burgh said that a silver Kia sedan was northbound on Route 23 when it swerved into the oncoming lane and collided with a southbbound Chevrolet pickup pulling a trailer. The truck belonged to a vendor who recently had left the DeKalb Farmers Market, Burgh said.

The driver of the Kia was taken by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital. His condition or the extent of his injuries was unknown.

The driver and two passengers in the truck were uninjured, Burgh said at the scene.

The sheriff’s office is investigating the crash.
