One person airlifted after morning crash south of Waterman

WATERMAN – Two people were injured and one was airlifted to a Rockford hospital after a crash at the intersection of Route 23 and Chicago Road early Friday, police said.

The crash was reported at 5:51 a.m. according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office. Police said that Gloria I. Aquino Diaz, 30, of Waterman, was driving a 2004 Toyota Rav 4 south on Route 23 when she began to turn left onto Chicago Road. Her vehicle was hit in the intersection by a northbound 2011 Chevy Impala driven by Pearce A. Tabor, 19, of Ottawa, police said.

Both Aquino Diaz and Tabor were injured in the collision. Police described Tabor’s injuries as non-life-threatening. Shabbona firefighter/paramedics treated him Tabor at the scene before a Lifeline helicopter airlifted him to OSF St. Anthony’s Hospital in Rockford. Aquino Diaz was taken by Waterman firefighter/paramedics to Valley West Hospital for treatment.

Both vehicles were heavily damaged in the collision; Aquino Diaz was cited for failure to yield when turning left, police said.
