Person shot by McHenry County sheriff’s deputies identified as 43-year-old man

A 43-year-old Port Barrington man was identified Thursday night as the person shot by McHenry County sheriff’s deputies Tuesday, McHenry County Coroner Michael Rein said in a news release.

Nicholas D. Sebastian was killed by multiple gunshot wounds to the body, according to a news release.

The McHenry County Coroner’s Office was contacted by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday, the day of the shooting, and the autopsy was performed Thursday by Dr. Kristin Escobar, according to the release.

Toxicology was pending at the time of the release.

McHenry County sheriff’s deputies responded to a domestic violence call at 1:22 a.m. Tuesday in the 200 block of Manchester Lane in Port Barrington, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office Tuesday.

The home is located in River Walk of Port Barrington, a neighborhood located just west of the Lake-McHenry county line.

Upon their arrival, someone opened fire on the deputies and a woman on the scene, injuring the woman, according to the release. Deputies returned fire, hitting the alleged shooter, who was pronounced dead on the scene.

The woman suffered injuries that were not life-threatening and was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, according to the release. An update on her condition was not available Thursday night.

The deputies involved in the shooting were uninjured, according to the release. They have been with the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office for one year and more than five years, respectively.

Both deputies were placed on paid administrative leave while the incident is investigated by an external group of law enforcement officers, according to the release.

The Major Investigation Assistance Team investigation will handle the investigation, and the coroner’s office will be working with MIAT, according to the releases.

McHenry County State’s Attorney Patrick Kenneally said Tuesday that his office will review the evidence collected by MIAT and make a determination on whether the shooting was justified.

Update: This article has been updated to correct the name of the person killed. The Coroner’s Office provided the incorrect spelling of his last name. The man’s name is Nicholas D. Sebastian.
