Police: Plainfield man admits to traveling with drugs

SYCAMORE – A Plainfield man who was pulled over on suspicion of speeding Thursday is facing drug charges after Illinois State Police said they found several ecstasy pills in a lockbox inside his vehicle.

According to court records, Robert D. Howe, 19, of the 7300 block of Southworth Circle, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance after a trooper pulled him over about 8:25 p.m. on Interstate 88 about a mile west of DeKalb for going 88 mph in a 70 mph zone.

According to court records, the trooper detected a “strong odor of burnt cannabis” in the Honda Civic. Howe, who was driving, said he had smoked marijuana the day before, according to court records.

The trooper searched the vehicle and found a locked black box on the rear passenger seat, and Howe said it contained ecstasy, according to court documents. Howe opened the box with a key and the trooper reportedly found 25 pills of what appeared to be ecstasy, according to court documents.

If convicted, Howe could face up to 15 years in prison.

Judge Phillip Montgomery ordered Howe released on his signature.

He next is due in court at 9 a.m. Jan. 31 for a preliminary hearing.
