Sandwich Fair adds free children’s entertainment area

SANDWICH – A new free entertainment area for children, the A-Z Fair Fun site, has been added at the east end of the Farm Zoo in the agriculture area of the Sandwich Fairgrounds.

Those bringing little ones to the 132nd Sandwich Fair, from Sept. 4 to 8, are invited to partake in three activities at the free A-Z Fair Fun center. It will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the five-day duration of the fair.

As a photo opportunity, laminated cards with brightly colored letters of the alphabet can be selected by the child, then arranged in pool noodles and held by the child so the parent can take a photograph. The words could spell out the child’s name or whatever people choose. The letters were made from photographs taken of vendors and other signs at 2018’s Sandwich Fair.

A coloring center will allow children to use washable markers and blank sheets of paper to create their own designs and drawings.

The third play area features a corn box filed with shelled corn, where boys and girls can play in corn kernels rather than sand. There will be scoops and funnels they can use to fill various containers.

Visitors can enjoy free entertainment during the Sandwich Fair, with productions by singers and bands on the Ag Land Stage in the agricultural area and Home Arts Stage behind the Home Arts Building.

Performers sometimes are located in the center of Otto’s Miniature Steam railroad tracks amid the antique farm equipment and trucks on display, whereas others wander the fairgrounds.

The free entertainment included with the price of admission includes the All-American Lumberjack Show, Buttons the Clown, Banjo Buddies Dixieland Trio, Dan Barth Entertainment, Carrie McQueen-Stilt Walking and Juggling, Balster Magic Productions Inc., Rob Thompson’s Pure Magic, Chris Vallillo Original and Traditional Acoustic Roots Music, Rob Ot the Robot, Moo-Mania, Mariachi America, The Spoon Man and Sherri Farley Playing the hammered dulcimer.

Children ages five and younger can enter the Sandwich Fairground for free. Daily general admission rates are $10 for adults and $6 for children ages six to 12.

Special admission rates are:

• Children ages 12 and younger can enter for free Wednesday

• Seniors can enter for $6 at the gate until 5 p.m. Thursday

• Anyone can enter for $6 at the gate until 5 p.m. Friday
