Sandwich man in ditch all night after motorcycle crash

WATERMAN – A Sandwich man who spent a night lying badly injured in a roadside ditch after a motorcycle accident remained hospitalized Monday.

William J. Abens, 51, told police he was riding his motorcycle on Waterman Road, south of Preserve Road, around 10 p.m. Friday when some animals crossed the road in front of him. Abens lost control of the motorcycle as he tried to avoid the animals and ended up in the west ditch on the side of the road, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Abens laid in the ditch overnight until a person walking by found him about 6:40 a.m. Saturday, the release shows.

Abens suffered a leg injury and was first taken to Northwestern Medicine Valley West Hospital in Sandwich in a Waterman Fire Department ambulance, then moved to the trauma center at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, according to the release.

An OSF spokesman said Abens is in fair condition.
