Saturday blaze leaves apartment building uninhabitable: FD

A Saturday afternoon blaze left a Lockport Township apartment building uninhabitable, according to a fire official.

Firefighters with the Lockport Township Fire Protection District responded to the two-story, four unit building on Hughes Avenue between Green Garden Place and Lois Street shortly before 1:30 p.m., Deputy Fire Chief Frank Blaskey said in an email.

A first-floor apartment was on fire, Blaskey said.

Only the residents of that unit were home at the time and they were able to escape before firefighters arrived, he said.

“Companies were able to bring the fire under control relatively quickly but spent a couple hours on scene checking for fire extension in the four separate living units,” Blaskey said. “The building sustained extensive smoke damage throughout leaving it completely uninhabitable.”

The residents who were home at the time of the fire were evaluated for smoke inhalation but declined transport to the hospital,” Blaskey said.

“The Red Cross was called in to assist two of the other building’s occupants,” he said

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Blaskey said.
