A 77-year-old Waterman man died after a single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning.
Richard Helmold, 77, of Waterman, was pronounced dead at Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.
A silver Chevy pickup was driving south on Route 23, north of Duffy Road when it entered the west ditch and hit a small ditch or embankment, continued driving another approximate 1,000 feet, and hit another ditch or embankment, according to the sheriff’s office.
The vehicle sustained “heavy front-end damage” and the airbags were deployed. Helmold was found laying unresponsive, submerged in water in a ravine, approximately 10 feet below the driver door.
Responding deputies performed CPR on the scene and and Helmold was transferred to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
