State Rep. McSweeney plans to run for new office in 2022

State Rep. David McSweeney, R-Barrington Hills, announced Thursday that he will not be running for his House seat again in fall 2020.

Instead, McSweeney said that he plans to run for either Illinois’ Secretary of State or for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Tammy Duckworth.

“I think I can add value to the state’s major problems,” McSweeney said. “That’s what I’m going to spend my time on in the campaign.”

McSweeney said that he plans to finish his current term in the Illinois House in the 52nd District, which runs though January 2021.

“I’m not going away,” McSweeney said.

McSweeney said that which role he runs for will likely be determined by whether current Secretary of State Jesse White runs again.

Although stating in 2015 he would not seek reelection, White was elected to a sixth term in 2018, beating Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland.

“I’m not stupid,” McSweeney said, saying he will not run for the seat if White chooses to run.

As for his current seat in the 52nd District, which McSweeney has held since January 2013, McSweeney said that he hopes current Barrington Hills Mayor Marty McLaughlin chooses to run. McLaughlin is considering running but has not committed to it.
