Sycamore-based maid service owner wants to 'leave legacy behind' for next generations

SYCAMORE – Giovanni Mikaelson of Sycamore had the idea of starting a maid service after talking to his financial advisor.

“The idea came from my financial advisor Nick Johnston of Northwestern Mutual after he saw me cleaning a few friends’ houses and doing such a good job he encouraged me to start my own business,” Mikaelson said. “I’m glad I did because now it is exercise.”

Mikaelson said he enjoys listening to music as he cleans, sweeps, mops and sanitizes.

Gee’s Maid Service offers 24-hour services including maid service, janitorial service for commercial and residential and power washing. The business is Black-owned and operated.

Although the business is based out of Sycamore, cleaning services are offered in the surrounding areas including DeKalb County, St. Charles, Campton Hills and Elmwood Park.

“I started this company out of necessity to leave a legacy behind for the next generation of Mikaelson,” he said. “I want young men and women to know you do not have to follow the stigma of what society says you have to, you don’t have to play ball, or work at McDonald’s. It is my sole responsibility as a man to not only provide for my children but my grandchildren.”

Mikaelson also announced last week he’s getting an early start on a campaign to run against DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott in the 2022 election for DeKalb County’s top cop “as a way to continue on my dream of change and leaving a legacy behind.”

Mikaelson said that as his business grows, he plans to give a percentage of his profits to the Children’s Home & Aid Society.

“I want to help kids in foster care,” he said. “I want to give back to others.”
