SYCAMORE – The Sycamore City Council will decide Monday whether marijuana dispensaries will be allowed inside city limits.
The council approval is recommended, according to the meeting agenda.
Gov. JB Pritzker signed the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act into law, legalizing and regulating the production, consumption and sale of marijuana in Illinois. The measure makes Illinois the 11th U.S. state to take such action.
People who are age 21 and older can possess up to 30 grams of raw cannabis, 5 grams of cannabis concentrate and 500 milligrams of marijuana-infused products, such as edibles, as of Jan. 1.
Although municipalities cannot restrict use, municipalities can decide whether to allow sales and how to regulate the within the city limits.
During the Sept. 16 council meeting, members compared recreational marijuana sales to previous decisions on video gambling and alcohol sales within the city.
The council held a public hearing Oct. 7 to discuss whether to allow dispensaries. During that meeting, some residents expressed support for allowing sales in town for a variety of reasons, but the response was overwhelmingly against.
Based on those discussions, the ordinance would allow for adult-use recreational cannabis dispensaries in Sycamore, according to the agenda.
The agenda also states that the ordinance prohibits on-site consumption of marijuana.
