Sycamore police ramping up speed enforcement

SYCAMORE – The Sycamore Police Department announced it will conduct special patrols to counter speeding between Friday and Sept. 21. The additional patrols are federally funded through the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program.

“Speed-related violations are a prominent contributor to vehicle crashes,” Sgt. Joseph Meeks said in a news release.

In 2017, more than 33% of all crashes, more than 36% of fatal crashes and about 40% of crashes with injuries were related to speeding offenses, according to IDOT.

“Our officers will be out specifically enforcing speed-related violations during this campaign, and the department wants to remind those who travel within our city to slow down and save lives,” Meeks said.

Police will be citing motorists for speed related violations and reminding motorists to watch their speed, eliminate distractions inside their vehicles and be aware of changing traffic conditions.
