Sycamore Police warns drivers to plan ahead during holiday season

SYCAMORE – Sycamore Police Department said it is cracking down on impaired and unbuckld drivers this holiday season.

Through Jan. 2, 2020, the department will participate in a “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” enforcement campaign, a police department news release states.

Sycamore Police Sgt. Joe Meeks urged people who attend parties and drink to stay smart.

“If your celebration will involve alcohol, please plan ahead for a sober ride home and remember to buckle up – it’s the best defense against an impaired driver,” he said in the release.

In December 2018, 839 people died in traffic crashes that involved a drunk driver nationwide, the release states. Throughout 2018 Christmas and New Year’s 2019 holidays, there were 285 drunk-driving related deaths.

Sycamore Police Department wants those in town to have a sober driver, take public transportation or use a ride-sharing service.

Also, if one sees an impaired driver on the road, pull over and call DeKalb County Dispatch at 815-895-2123, or 911 if it’s an emergency.

The police urge those to take the keys of an innebriated friend and to always wear a seatbelt.
