Symphony of Joliet reports largest fatal outbreak of COVID-19 at longterm care facilities in Illinois

New data released Sunday by the Illinois Department of Public Health shows hundreds of coronavirus cases are linked to long-term care facilities across the state, with outbreaks ranging from single digits to in excess of 80 in some locations.

The released data comes after a controversial week for many long-term care facilities in the state, including Symphony of Joliet nursing home, which according to IDPH numbers has the single highest concentration of cases in the state. The nursing home on Thursday confirmed 23 deaths have been linked to the facility.

IDPH prefaces the data reported Sunday by saying it’s provisional and subject to change” and will be updated on a weekly basis regarding all long-term care facilities statewide.

In northern Illinois, outbreaks have reached dozens of facilities, with the hardest hit being Symphony in Joliet with 81 cases reported and 23 deaths. The case count is tied with Windsor Park Manor in DuPage County with 81 cases and 11 deaths.

Chateau Center Nursing & Rehabilitation, also in DuPage County reported 54 cases and 10 deaths, Presence Villa Franciscan has a reported 40 cases and 6 deaths in Will County.

In Cook County, which has 804 total cases so far and 146 deaths among its 104 long-term care facilities, another Symphony affiliate, Symphony of South Shore nursing home, reported 37 cases and one death. Westchester Health & Rehabilitation Center reported 43 cases and nine deaths, Elevate Care North reports 42 cases and 8 deaths.

DeKalb, Kendall, LaSalle, Lee, Ogle and Whiteside counties did not report any cases linked to long-term care facilities.

In Boone County, a third Symphony facility, Symphony Northwoods, reported three cases. In DuPage County, a total of 310 cases and 39 deaths were reported at 21 facilities.

In Kane County, 77 cases and 10 deaths were reported as of Sunday, including 31 cases at Bickford of Aurora and six deaths, 21 cases at Elgin Mental Health Center, 14 cases at Elmwood Terrace and 11 cases and four deaths at Fox River Rehab & Healthcare.

There are 13 cases so far reported in McHenry County, including four at Alden Terrace of McHenry and nine at The Fountains at Crystal Lake, according to the IDPH.

In Lake County, 149 cases and 35 deaths are linked to the county’s 20 facilities, including its largest reported outbreak at Wauconda Care, with 33 cases and six deaths.

In total, Will County reports 218 cases and 37 deaths.

In Jo Daviess, only one case was reported at Galena Stauss Nursing Home.
