To avoid more stalemates, DeKalb Park District board seeks 5th member

DeKALB – The DeKalb Park District is seeking to fill a vacant seat on its Board of Commissioners, which was left empty by a lack of candidates running in the April consolidated election.

Interested people must be a resident of the city of DeKalb for at least the past three years, and live within the jurisdictional boundaries of the park district, according to a news release.

The board recently stalemated on a vote related to transferring ownership of the Nehring building downtown to the city of DeKalb. The vote was a 2-2 tie because there are only four members, and the board could not reach a consensus. The full board would have five commissioners.

The appointed commissioner would fill the term until the April 2021 election, and join the four elected commissioners who serve six-year terms. The terms are not salaried.

Applications can be found at, with a July 8 deadline to submit.

All applications will be received by board president Phil Young, and reviewed by the board. An executive session of the board will then convene, where eligible applicants will meet individually with the board, the release shows.
