UPDATE: DeKalb man shot in 1000 block of Hillcrest Sunday, shooter still at large, police say

DeKALB – A 32-year-old DeKalb man was shot in the 1000 block of West Hillcrest Drive Sunday, and police are warning residents to stay alert because the shooter is still at large.

DeKalb Police Commander Steve Lekkas said contrary to reports on social media Sunday night, no child was shot or injured in the incident which took place around 8 p.m. Sunday in the Hillcrest shopping center in front of Sea Captain restaurant in DeKalb.

“We’re not releasing anything on his condition yet,” Lekkas said, who added the man was taken to Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital. “Our detectives are assisting and the major case squad is on scene.”

DeKalb police issued an alert at around 8 p.m. Sunday of an ‘active threat’ reported at 1011 W. Hillcrest Drive. The alert says a suspect is still at large, and police are warning residents to leave the area immediately, and if you can’t, to shelter in place.

As of 9:15 p.m., Lekkas said police do not have anyone in custody in relation to the shooting yet, and residents should remain alert.

A Daily Chronicle reporter on the scene Sunday said police initially weren’t letting residents into the area even if they lived around there, but as of 9:10 p.m. allowing residents in the area to go back to their homes, though the parking lot around Rocky’s and Sea Captain was roped off as police investigators worked.

“We’re going to be investigating the crime scene but we will allow people in,” Lekkas said. “We did set up a perimeter and close things down but if people need to get back to the area they can.”

Police have blocked off portions of the intersection at Greenbrier and Hillcrest, including the one close to Sea Captain. The area of intersection nearest to Casey’s General Store remains open for traffic.

“We’re still looking into all the video and everything right now to try to determine what exactly happened,” Lekkas said.

Northern Illinois University Police assisted Sunday.

This is a developing story which will be updated as more information becomes available.
