Update: Juneteenth celebration planned for Friday in Hopkins Park canceled

DeKALB – Juneteenth will be celebrated from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 19, at Hopkins Park in DeKalb.

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. The holiday began on June 19, 1865 in Galveston, Texas, and the day is observed as African American Emancipation Day.

DeKalb’s Juneteenth celebration will include a barbecue, music, food and fun for the entire family. Feel free to bring jump ropes and games. Wearing a mask is required.

The League of Women Voters of DeKalb County will attend the event and help register voters. Bring an ID and any postmarked mail with your address.
