Warming centers available across DeKalb County as temperatures plummet to single digits

After the weekend winter storm blew through DeKalb County, a cold front has settled in, and warming centers around DeKalb and Sycamore are available for residents who need a break from the bitter single digit temperatures.

Sunday’s could see a high of 19 degrees, according to the National Weather Service, though Sunday morning hadn’t yet reached double digits and wind chills reported as low as minus 10 degrees.

If you need to seek shelter from the cold, you can use warming centers free of charge at the following locations:

In DeKalb, you can use the DeKalb Public Library, 309 Oak St., the DeKalb Senior Center (closed on Sunday) 330 Grove St., or the DeKalb Park District’s Haish Gymnasium (closed on Sunday), 303 S. Ninth St. The library is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

If none of those are available, Hope Haven homeless shelter is a 24-hour no-turn-away shelter at 1145 Rushmore Drive.

In Sycamore, you can use the Sycamore Police Department, 535 DeKalb Avenue, and Sycamore Public Library , 103 E. State St.

Residents should take steps to prepare, according to a Sycamore Fire Department, including dressing appropriately for the weather, being able to recognize hypothermia symptoms, having emergency supplies for home and work ready, and having a winter go-kit for your automobile.

The fire departments urge people to check on their elderly family members and neighbors to make sure they’re safe. Residents are also encouraged to keep their car’s gas tank full, because if stranded, it gives the vehicle more time to provide passengers warmth before help arrives.

The fire department also suggests residents wear loose fitting, lightweight and layered clothing. They say prepare for possible isolation in one’s home for several day, which includes preparing an emergency supply kit. For ideas, visit
