Will County records: NIU field assistant made video recordings of nude girl

A Northern Illinois University field assistant has been arrested on charges alleging he made an unauthorized video recording of a minor while she was in a bathroom, according to court records.

The victim in the case is the 12-year-old daughter of Jay Vecchiet’s girlfriend, according to a protective order petitioned against him by his girlfriend.

Vecchiet, 31, of the 25700 block of Skyline Court in Plainfield, was arrested and taken to the Will county jail shortly after 4 p.m. Monday. Plainfield police are investigating. He was released from jail at close to 1:30 a.m. Tuesday after he posted 10% of his $150,000 bond.

On Friday, Will County Judge Sarah Jones signed a warrant for Vecchiet’s arrest. The warrant said Vecchiet works for NIU, and his girlfriend’s protective order said he worked in the university’s biology department. Vecchiet’s LinkedIn profile said he is a field assistant at the university.

Vecchiet is charged with two counts of unauthorized video recording of a minor between the dates of June 1 and July 21.

The video recordings were allegedly taken in the bathroom of his home, according to a criminal complaint.

His girlfriend’s protective order alleged she found “naked pictures” of her daughter on Vecchiet’s phone that he took “with a hidden camera.” She reported him to the police, who seized his old phone and camera, her protective order said.

“I need to protect my kids until the investigation is complete,” she said.
