DeKalb 18-year-old facing murder charges held without bond

DeKALB – An 18-year-old from DeKalb who faces murder charges following a shooting at an apartment complex on DeKalb’s north side Thursday is being held at DeKalb County Jail without bond after a judge denied his release Saturday morning.

Adam D. Koertner, 18, of the 900 block of Greenbrier Road, faces life in prison after being charged with first-degree murder Friday. DeKalb police investigators and prosecutors from the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office allege Koertner pulled the trigger in a fatal shooting that left one man dead after suffering multiple gunshot wounds.

DeKalb County Coroner Denny Miller has not yet released the name of the victim, a man who died Friday afternoon at Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital, because his office is trying to contact family members.

DeKalb County Associate Judge Marcy Buick denied Koertner’s release in bond call at the DeKalb County Courthouse Saturday morning, according to information from the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s office. DeKalb County Assistant State’s Attorney Stephanie Klein filed a motion that Koertner receive no bail, since he is alleged to have used a firearm in the homicide which disqualifies him from bonding out under Illinois law.

Koertner is scheduled to appear in front of DeKalb County Judge Robbin Stuckert for a second bond hearing Tuesday morning at the courthouse.

DeKalb police responded to a report of shots fired in the 800 block of Edgebrook Drive about 11:15 p.m. Thursday. The department, along with Northern Illinois University police, issued a safety alert about midnight asking residents to avoid the area. Upon arrival, officers found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in a hallway of 835 Edgebrook Drive.

Koertner was taken into custody without incident by DeKalb police around 3:40 p.m. in the 900 block of Greenbrier Road Friday afternoon. DeKalb police Cmdr. Bob Redel said Friday the investigation is ongoing, and DeKalb police have not said whether more people are involved in the shooting.
