Genoa Food Hub to host second community holiday meal Thursday

GENOA – The Genoa Area Community Food Hub will host a free community holiday meal on Thursday, Dec. 17.

Meals will be available drive-thru style from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. (or until meals run out) at The Hub, 415 W. Main St. in Genoa. A traditional holiday dinner of baked ham and trimmings will be prepared by Voluntary Action Center of DeKalb County.

The Genoa Hub, part of DeKalb County Community Gardens, serves more than 100 hungry families each month. The number of residents coming to the Hub has increased because of the impacts of COVID-19 such as unemployment, underemployment, an unexpected medical or car bill or additional family members joining the household.

A variety of programs help bring extra groceries to family tables including:

• The Food Pantry at the Genoa Hub is open to Genoa-Kingston residents the first and third Monday mornings and the second and fourth Tuesday evenings of each month.

• Monthly “pay-as-you’re-able” dinners open to all community members. Served drive-thru style due to COVID-19 precautions, many of these meals have been prepared by local talent. (The Dec. 17 meal will be shared in the spirit of community and the holidays; no meal donations are expected.)

• Holiday meal kits will be distributed from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Dec. 15 and 9 to 11 a.m. Dec. 21. Reservations can be made by Genoa-Kingston residents; all other residents will be first-come, first-served. Reservations must be made at https://forms.gle/32q42KFVhUwpmBXH6
