Go back to school with the Y

A new school year means a fresh start for kids – a chance to start new routines and habits, build friendships and discover new possibilities and interests. To help nurture and inspire kids to discover their potential, the Kishwaukee Family YMCA is offering a variety of programs for infants with their caregivers through high school-age students.

YMCA parent-child programs are offered free with YMCA membership and open to program participants for a nominal fee. Programs include all new Stroller Rollers, Parent/Child Tumbling and Parent/Child Family Play time (ages 0 to 5 years). Classes promote parent-child bonding, hand-eye coordination, body awareness, motor skills and socialization. Parent/Child Swimming lessons continue to be offered to families and are now free of charge to YMCA members.

The Kishwaukee Family YMCA offers programs geared to children ages 2 to 5 including Preschool Tumbling, Preschool Lil’ Sportsters and Parent’s Day Out. Classes provide activities to enhance motor skills, strengthen listening skills, improve strength and flexibility and build confidence.

New this year is the Fourth Grade Initiative, which offers a free one-year YMCA membership to all existing and incoming fourth-graders throughout the community. 4GI aims to provide fourth-graders with opportunities for fitness and sports, as well as a chance to socialize with peers in a safe, supervised environment.

Junior High Y Club also is new to the Kishwaukee Family YMCA this fall. This program offers a fun and safe environment full of games, music and activities and will offer middle school students a place to relax and hang out with friends, learn more about themselves and how they can make a positive impact in their community.

The Youth and Government program provides students in grades 9 through 12 the opportunity to experience the democratic process and develop the leadership skills needed to become citizens of a participatory society. Y&G meets weekly to collaborate with fellow students to research and develop a bill to bring in front of a model legislative program.

The Kishwaukee Family YMCA will offer Family Fun Nights and Family Sunday Fun Days this school year to help promote family bonding. Events are open to YMCA members free with Y membership and include pool parties, Family Zumba, Family Nerf War, bingo/ice cream sundae bar and more.

Registration for the fall sessions is open. To register, visit kishymca.org or register at the Kishwaukee Family YMCA front desk at 2500 W. Bethany Road in Sycamore.
