Hampshire man arrested, one injured in DeKalb shooting after police find 13 bullet shells, blood at scene Friday

DeKALB – A Hampshire man is facing armed violence charges among others after DeKalb police say he hid in a bush outside an apartment building in the 800 block of Edgebrook Drive and fired 13 shots from a 9mm gun around 2 a.m. Friday, injuring one person.

According to a news release from the DeKalb Police Department, Darris Flores, 27, of Hampshire, is charged with armed violence, aggravated discharge of a firearm, unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon and criminal damage to property. If convicted of the most serious crime, armed violence which becomes a class x felony in Illinois if a firearm is involved, Flores could face up to 60 years in jail and fines up to $25,000.

Police say they responded to gunshots around 2 a.m. Friday in the 800 block of Edgebrook Drive, and upon arrival, found 13 9mm shell casings and blood. One person sustained non-life threatening injuries, the release states, and was identified by police at the scene.

Investigators say a parked car nearby was riddled with gunfire, and the apartment building nearby was also damaged by bullets.

Video surveillance captured from the scene shows two separate groups appearing to have a disagreement prior to the shooting, police said. During the disagreement, Flores was seen on camera walking in an apartment building and exiting it about one minute later. He was then approached by several people and then walked away toward a large bush.

The video then showed a person shooting multiple times fro the area of the bush.

A warrant was issued for Flores’ arrest, and around 6:40 p.m., police arrested him in Hampshire.

Northern Illinois University Police Department, the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, and the DeKalb County States Attorney’s Office assisted in the investigation.
